When we were deciding where to go for our volunteering trip, Cambodia immediately came to the top of our minds. For me, during my visit to Siem Reap two years ago, I discovered that regional disparity was a huge problem in the country, especially around the tourist areas. What shocked me was the immense difference in living conditions between those who live in the developed areas and those live just a street away. When I was visiting Angkor Wat, there were well-established stalls selling the 'typical' tourist souvenirs , yet just around the corner, there were the war/mine victims who had to rely on the generous donations from tourists.
We chose to work with this NGO because it targets the impoverished families in Siem Reap, which we believe is the correct thing to do. In order to reduce the disparities, one should first provide adequate infrastructure for those who are in need.
